You have one number to call. It is in another country, it only answers in the morning, and the only way to reach it is to dial it. That should be simple. Today it is expensive, and you never know what it will cost until it is already spent.
And the card stays blocked, the appointment is not confirmed, the paperwork is not sorted. Kliwe is the simple version of the same call: you open a page, you see the price, you dial. When you hang up, the screen tells you exactly what it cost.
How it works
Four steps, and none of them is complicated. Nothing to install, nothing to sign, and the last step is the one people care about: when the call ends, the screen says what it cost.
Kliwe is a web page. It works on your computer, on your phone, and on any machine you happen to borrow. Nothing is downloaded. It asks for your microphone once, the same way a video call does.

Mobiles, landlines, offices, switchboards. These are the calls people actually make: something has to be sorted out, it has to be sorted out this week, and the only way in is a phone number that answers between nine and eleven in another country.
They will only give the results to family, and only over the phone.
The appointment line is a phone number. It does not take email, and it stops answering at eleven.
They will unblock the card, but only if you call the branch yourself.
The enrolment has to be confirmed before Friday, and nobody there answers a message.
The account is still in your name, the house is not yours any more, and this has to be closed.

People do not answer numbers they do not know. So you choose what the other end sees, and the option most people want — your own mobile number, the one they already have saved under your name — costs nothing to set up.
What you get by default, and a real working number rather than a blank. Fine for a consulate or a utility company. Less fine for your mother, who does not answer numbers she does not know either.
Show the number you already carry. We ring it once, you type in the code, and from then on that is what appears when you dial. It stays free — proving that a number you own is yours should not cost anything.
Rent a number in one of 5 countries and your call arrives as a local one. They can also use it to call you back, which is the only way anyone can reach you on Kliwe.
A rented number costs $2.50 a month, and it comes out of the balance you already put there. No card is kept on file, there is no subscription to cancel and no renewal date to remember. Let the balance run down and the number is released — you are never billed for it, chased for it, or told you owe anything.
What it costs
You see the price before, the meter during, and the receipt after. There is nothing to work out at the end of the month, because there is no end of the month.
And three things we do not do.
We do not round a twenty-second call up to a minute — you pay for twenty seconds. We do not charge a connection fee, which is why a call that rings out costs nothing at all. And your balance does not expire, ever: no ninety-day clock, no inactivity fee, and no quiet month in which credit you paid for becomes ours.

The country comes from the number itself, and the price per minute is on screen before anything connects. Landlines and mobiles are priced separately. If it is more than you thought, you have not spent a cent.

Coverage
The number of countries is easy to advertise and means very little on its own. These four things decide whether the call you actually need to make will go through.
Dialled the same way everywhere: type the number in full, with its country code, and it rings. No separate product per region, and no country you have to ask permission to call.
Clinics, ministries, bank branches, school offices and notaries mostly have a fixed line and nothing else. Kliwe calls them exactly the way it calls a mobile.
Calls go out over connections that answer for their own quality, rather than over whatever was cheapest that morning. A call you cannot hear is not cheaper — it is a call you have to make again.
Where you are does not change the price. Only the number you are calling does. A call to Bogotá costs the same from Madrid, from Miami and from a train.

Kliwe did not come out of a market study. It came out of the ordinary version of this: a number that only answers in office hours in a time zone you are no longer in, and a phone plan that turns a fifteen-minute conversation into a line on a bill you notice a month later. Everything on this page that looks like a stance — the price before the call, the billing by the second, the balance that does not expire, the limits printed on the home page — is a reaction to one bad afternoon.

Security
So here is exactly what happens to your money and to your call, in plain terms — including the part most pages leave out.
Between you and Kliwe, the audio is encrypted with DTLS-SRTP, the standard every browser uses for voice. After our network it enters the ordinary telephone system, which nobody can encrypt, so we are not going to claim we do.
Payments run through Stripe. Your card details are entered on their side and never touch our servers. Kliwe is the name that appears on your statement — we sell you the credit ourselves rather than through a reseller.
No audio is ever kept, so there is no archive of your voice to leak or hand over. What we keep is the call record — number, time, duration, cost — because billing and the law both require it. You can also switch on written transcripts of your own calls; that is off unless you turn it on, and it is text, never sound.
Every call you have made, in one list, exportable and deletable by you. What we have to keep for billing is written on the privacy page rather than implied.
Your sign-in is yours alone, and a session can be ended from any other device. Nobody at Kliwe can place a call on your account or spend your balance.
Top-ups are screened and expensive destinations are limited on new accounts. It is mildly inconvenient once, and it is part of why the prices on this page can stay where they are.
Limits
Every one of these is something you would otherwise find out after paying. They are on the home page, in ordinary type, at the same size as everything else.
Not 911, not 112, not 999, not any national emergency number. Kliwe has no way of knowing where you physically are, and an emergency service needs to know that above everything else. Keep a mobile line, a landline or a local SIM for this. If you remember one sentence from this page, we would like it to be this one.
Voice only, and that includes rented numbers. If what you need is a number that receives verification codes from a bank or a website, this is not that product — and we would rather lose the sign-up here than issue the refund later.
Premium-rate lines, shortcodes and most national service numbers are blocked. Those are the numbers international calling fraud is built on, and blocking them is a large part of why the prices on this page can be what they are.
Out of the box, Kliwe only dials outward. Nobody can call you back until you rent a number of your own, and then only on that number — there is no way for a stranger to reach you through Kliwe.
And the part most pages leave out.
Kliwe is a young company. There is no SOC 2 and no ISO 27001, we are not going to pretend otherwise, and there will not be a badge on this page implying it. What is written above is what the product does and does not do today. When any of it changes, this section changes with it.

No, and there is nothing to install even if you wanted to. Kliwe is a web page: you open it, sign in and dial. That is true on a computer and equally true on a phone — the same page in your phone’s browser, with the same balance. The only thing it ever asks for is permission to use the microphone, once, which is what any video call asks for.
No. You do not need a SIM, a mobile plan or a number of any kind to place calls — an email address and a balance are the whole requirement. It works on a phone with no SIM card in it at all, and on a computer that has never had one. A number of your own only matters if you want people to be able to call you back, and that is optional.
By default, a working Kliwe number. You can instead verify your own mobile — we ring it once, you type in the code — and then people see the number they already have saved under your name, which makes an enormous difference to whether anyone answers. Verifying is free. Or you can rent a local number in the country you are calling, so it arrives as a local call.
Only if you rent a number, which costs $2.50 a month and is taken from your balance rather than from a card. There is no subscription and nothing to cancel: if the balance runs out, the number is released and that is the end of it. Without a rented number, Kliwe only dials outward, which also means no stranger can reach you through it.

There is no connection fee and no minimum duration, which together mean a call that rings out and is never answered costs exactly nothing. Charging begins the moment somebody picks up, and the receipt at the end shows the seconds it counted.

No. Kliwe is voice only, and that includes rented numbers. If you are looking for a number that can receive verification codes from a bank, a shop or a website, this will not do it. We would rather tell you here and lose the sign-up than take the money and have you find out afterwards.
Two things. You see the price per minute before the call goes out instead of on a bill weeks later, and you pay by the second instead of by the rounded-up minute. There is nothing to sign and nothing monthly: you put a balance on the account, calls come out of it, and what is left stays there.
Almost always. A call needs roughly 100 kbps in each direction, which is less than a music stream and far less than video. What actually causes trouble is a Wi-Fi login page you have not accepted yet, or an office network blocking the ports voice uses — both are usually obvious within a few seconds, and neither costs you anything, because a call that does not connect is not charged.
